My Statue is What?

Okay lets face it, sometimes statues just suck. Is it the sculptors fault? Is it the person who commissioned the project? Was the subject matter just too ugly to improve? Or was the artist simply after the commission? These questions often flow threw my mind when I see a horrendous statue. I always check the feet of a statue first because  I figure if an artist spends enough time to give detail to a foot he is serious about his work. It is a personal thing, but that is what I think. Though I sometimes I think a sculptor starts with the feet first and spends a great deal of time practicing on that first before attempting the rest of the body. But next time you see a statue check out the feet, I guarantee, good feet, good statue.

Lets take the Lachlan Macquarie statue for example. This poor statue has the horrid nickname of "The Flasher" because of the cape. Yes, people think it is about to flash someone. Now I don't think for a minute the sculptor had a clue that his piece of art would have that effect on the public. Placing it under a tree in a dark corner didn't help but.....

Why Oh Why?

Lets face it as long as the world turns there will always be ugly statues. Not even the greatest sculptors were without critics. It just seems the more advanced our society the less impressive our public art. Maybe sculptors don't have as much time on their hands?
  • The artist just doesn't Care
  • The artist lied about his/her qualifications
  • Thought they meant abstract
  • You get what you pay for
  • Bad eyesight
